How to Replace an audi spare key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the audi spare key cost's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. If the sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

Peugeot-2021-New-Black.pngThe G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi replacement key service near me 80, 100 200, UrS and audikey RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
