How to Replace an Audi Car Key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, Audi car key the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and should be replaced. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially when they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the audi keyfob's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi a5 key fob 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
