suzuki-logo.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, Audi car key the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
