Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour help promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in the form of a double-album called Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
