Due to sagging hinges, and a general deficiency in energy efficiency, older windows, especially those in older homes, may be difficult to open or close. In most instances, a few minor repairs can turn these windows into smooth operators and save homeowners money on energy bills.

In order to make these repairs to the sash it is essential to have all of the tools needed before you begin. Begin by marking the position of the hinge channel on the frame using a pencil (Photo 1). This will help you get the channel back into place correctly when you're finished. Remove the sash, and remove all the hardware, including the beads for parting, cords, and chains that keep the sash in place.
