How to Replace an audi a3 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're an Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your car. It is an important part of the transmission in your audi advanced key since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points.
