Only one electrically powered funicular system was effectively built and operated, on two separate parts of the "Canal de la Marne au Rhin". Another electric mule system worth mentioning, technically similar but used for different purposes, is the one that is still being operated on the Panama Canal. It differed from the electric mules used by the French and the Belgians, using only one rail. The German vehicles were more sophisticated than those of the French. The service was discontinued in 1904 and replaced by tractors on rails (picture above). It remained in service until 1945, when it was dismantled by the Soviets. They were equipped with a system that regulated the speed of the boat while the speed of the tractor remained the same, by mechanically adjusting the length of the tow cable. For longer AC lines, system stability becomes the limiting factor. These large wheels were aimed to assure the stability of the tractor, but they had the disadvantage that they quickly caused deep grooves in the tow path.
