A robot vacuum is able to keep the floors clean enough to cut down on the frequency you need to manually vacuum. Choose one that has an easy navigation, can clean stairs and corners and has a huge dust bin that requires emptying only periodically.

There are models that mop and charge themselves which can be important for people with pets or kids. A lot of the top performers in our tests also have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling, the i3 EVO are both identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying features. The i3+ is a good option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience but are willing to manually empty the dust bin when it is full.

Both robots excel at picking up surface debris on carpets and hard floors and they are very good in maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ doesn't feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or other top-rated robots we test. It can get stuck on power cords and socks and have trouble moving between different surfaces, like carpet and hardwood.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas in which the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include clearing out any toys or clutter it may encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the bin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. When the i3+'s internal bin is full or its battery is empty it goes back to its docking station and automatically empties its dirt into the station's dust bin and continues cleaning the area where it started. We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning session, move itself around the room, and even vacuum an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and evaluating performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums that are cordless and feel like minivans or buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like a sports car. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered with seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries, which produces power without fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system removes allergens, and then releases cleaner air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets and collect large crumbs or fine dust. It has three different suction modes that can be adjusted to the task. It quickly converts from handheld to floor vacuum and back.

This model comes with a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% in 3.5 hours. It also provides the ability to connect two attachments as well as the handheld. This is a huge improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. The tests conducted by CR show that its claims to run up to 60 minutes are not true. This is a typical, not an exceptional, time for the battery-powered cordless vacuum. This is still enough to get rid of the majority of a typical-sized home, but not quite long enough to clean every spot (though a second run-through usually can be effective). However, this model doesn't have its advantages It's lighter and more mobile than the older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is noticeably superior on carpets with a low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

The 694 is a basic robotic vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have lots of money to spend on a robot. It's capable of sucking up all types of debris and sizes during our testing, and it often goes over the same areas multiple times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front side helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls which is a nice feature.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it lacks the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top 10 robot vacuum cleaner choices and the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. It is prone to getting stuck on cords for phones or furniture that is low and often runs out of power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 because it has less parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower cost of recurring costs and has more advanced automation abilities and is able to better navigate itself. It also has a larger dustbin, and charges more quickly.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, as it has a better battery life, can change its suction power mode on its own and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It is also more durable and has a more powerful motor, and works better on bare floors and low-pile carpet, while providing a wider array of automation features.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in home electronics. It's not surprising, then, that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence technology to aid in navigation and obstacles avoidance.

The app provides a range of options for customizing your robotic cleaner. These include mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior adjustments docking frequency settings and many more. It's easy to understand and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our testing, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86% of it. It was not as successful in avoiding taller items such as socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also a little more expensive than the other models we tried and could be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The app lets you access the camera onboard of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning area. This feature lets you monitor your pets or the kids if you're away from home. The filter and dustbin can be washed for quick, painless cleanup.
