In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. They are cheap and easy-to-find especially when they're a Bosch model like ours. 5. Tachometer
A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your audi key shell since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning.
