Bedside cots, also referred to as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months, when your baby is required to move into a cot or a moses basket.
Mehack is an MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with a bassinet that can be used all around the home. It also has a manual rocking feature. It was also easy to put together and came in its own travel bag for convenient storage.
Size
Cots and cots differ in terms of size and size, with cots being a bit smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be converted into toddler beds. However they are typically used for children up to the age of three. If you're looking for a wooden cot, you'll find two sizes available both large and standard both of which convert into a cot bed/toddler bed. If you wish for your child (or children) to be able to sleep in the larger cot, it's a good idea to choose the larger size.
Jasmine, an MFM mum who tested the product at home, said she liked that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too big for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to carry her child in and out for night feeding or soothing, and the quality is top-notch when compared to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.
Emily, another home tester, loves the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi Lora - it is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also is a rock. It also has an incline of reflux as well as a machine washable liner that is breathable. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. Contrary to some International or European cot brands The Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase another mattress as your baby grows. However, it will require an exclusive bedding set (60x120cm). Here's the ideal mattress for your cot.
Height
When choosing a crib for your bed make sure it can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It also needs to be able of being dropped down out of the way so that you can pull your baby towards you during night feedings or for soothing. This is particularly useful when you are recovering from a C section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to an elevation of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.
You should also consider the height you would like the base of your crib to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, others prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. One of our mum testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It comes with an easily collapsible side that you can push at the push of one button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby can hold their head up unaided typically about 6 months. This is due to the danger of inhaling suffocation. It's also important to note that if you opt for a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a cot it is necessary to remove the sides as soon as your child is ready for this to ensure they don't climb out or get out of the bed.
Design
There are a variety of bedside crib that range from basic to extravagant. Some of the more expensive options come with features such as an integrated light or a center of calm that plays music and sounds and has two levels that help to soothe your baby back to sleep, or an adjustable footrest that makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. There are also models which can be made into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both) which is ideal when your child is ready to move to a larger bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and move them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of the bed. This makes it perfect for new mums who are recovering from Caesareans or who require bed for longer periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying it was simple to use and made her baby much easier particularly after her c-section.
Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's larger than other cribs for bed that we've tested, but it folds up into its travel bedside crib bag to make it a small size when not in use.
MFM mom home test Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib she explained how it was created with babies and parents in mind. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing as it means you can move the bassinet from side-to-side and one of its sides can be let down to make access easier - particularly for new mums who are recovering from their c-sections,' she said.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is the fact that it can easily be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or his or her nappies. This is why it's perfect for mothers who are still be recovering from a C-section. It is recommended to choose a design which lets you lower the side of the bed by pressing a button. This will allow you to raise your child without getting out of the bed. This is essential, especially as your baby grows and becomes more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the chance of injury or suffocation such as pillowcases and duvets which could cause your baby to become overheated.
The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product like gaps between the 4-in-1 bedside crib sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are entrapped by a bedside rail and an adult bed.
The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into other types of use, such as bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multiuse bedside rocking crib sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets using a removable attachment that can be permanently connected or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.
The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule which is expected to be published in the month of November 2021.
