How to Replace an audi spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, visit my website when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards).
